When Natural Isn’t Enough: My Knee Replacement & What It Taught Me About Aging Wisely
There’s something I’ve always believed—and taught:
Aging well is not about perfection.
It’s about wisdom.
And sometimes, wisdom leads you down a path you didn’t expect.
This week, I had a full knee replacement.
Not years ago. Not something I’ve been quietly recovering from.
Just days ago—on Monday.
And I want to share this with you openly, honestly, and with the same commitment to integrity that I’ve always tried to live by.

💛 Living What We Teach—Even When It’s Hard

If you’ve been part of this community for any length of time, you know how deeply I value a holistic, natural approach to health and aging.
I believe in:
  • Supporting the body through nutrition
  • Strengthening it through movement
  • Calming it through nervous system care
  • Healing through rest, faith, and natural tools
That hasn’t changed.
But something else hasn’t changed either:
My knee.

🦵 A Lifetime of Wear, Tear, and Reality

This wasn’t a sudden issue.
I’ve had knee problems my entire life.
Years of basketball.
Wear and tear.
Injuries along the way.
And, quite honestly, a knee joint that I probably didn’t win the genetic lottery with.
Over time, it became clear that this wasn’t something I could fully “natural my way out of.”
And I tried.

🌿 Yes, I Tried the Natural Route First

Before ever considering surgery, I leaned into everything I believe in:
  • Anti-inflammatory nutrition
  • Strength and mobility work
  • Rest and recovery practices
  • Natural pain support strategies
  • Mindset and stress regulation
Not for a short season—but consistently, intentionally, over time.
And those things helped.
Let me be very clear about that.
They supported my body.
They improved my function.
They slowed progression.
But they did not fully restore what had been lost.

⚖️ When Wisdom Means Choosing a Different Tool

There comes a point for many of us—especially as we age—when the question shifts.
Not:
“Can I fix this naturally?”
But:
“What is the wisest way to move forward now?”
For me, the answer became clear:
Surgery wasn’t a failure of natural health.
It was a tool.
A necessary, appropriate, and thoughtful intervention to restore mobility, reduce pain, and allow me to continue living actively and fully.

✨ Let Me Say This Clearly

Choosing surgery does not diminish:
  • The effectiveness of natural approaches
  • The value of holistic living
  • Or the role those practices continue to play
In fact, I would argue the opposite.
Those practices are what:
  • Carried me as far as possible before surgery
  • Prepared my body for surgery
  • And will now support my recovery

🌱 Holistic Living Doesn’t Mean Avoiding Help

This is where I think many people quietly struggle.
There’s an unspoken pressure—especially in natural health spaces—that if you’re doing everything “right,” you shouldn’t need medical intervention.
But that’s simply not true.
Holistic wellness is not about rejecting medicine.
It’s about discernment.
It’s about asking:
  • What does my body need right now?
  • What will restore function and quality of life?
  • What combination of tools will serve me best?
And sometimes… that includes surgery.

💛 Integrity Matters—Especially Here

Not long ago, I wrote about the importance of living authentically and with integrity as we age.
About aligning our lives with truth—not image.
About choosing honesty over appearance.
This is one of those moments.
I could have waited to share this.
I could have presented it after the fact, polished and complete.
But that wouldn’t reflect who I want to be—or what I want this community to be built on.
So I’m sharing it now.
In real time.
Still in recovery.
Still walking this out.

🛠️ My Focus Now: A Holistic Recovery

While surgery was the intervention, healing is still holistic.
That’s where my focus is now.
Here’s what that looks like:

🥗 Nourishing My Body

  • Anti-inflammatory foods
  • Adequate protein for tissue repair
  • Hydration and micronutrient support

🚶‍♀️ Intentional Movement

  • Following physical therapy guidance
  • Gentle, progressive mobility
  • Respecting the body’s pace

🧠 Nervous System Support

  • Managing stress to support healing
  • Breathing practices
  • Creating a calm, restorative environment

😴 Rest & Sleep

  • Prioritizing deep, consistent sleep
  • Allowing the body to do what it was designed to do

🌿 Natural Support

  • Using appropriate natural tools to support comfort and healing

🙏 Faith & Perspective

  • Trusting God in the process
  • Letting this be a season of growth, not frustration
  • Embracing both strength and surrender

🌿Am I Going to Do This Perfectly?

It is highly unlikely that I will do all of this every day and do it just right. I am trying to be as honest as I can be. I whole-heartedly believe this approach is the best approach for me. I will keep you posted. This journey isn't about being perfect. It is about making the best decisions, mind, body, and spirit, as we can at the time. It is also about forgiving ourselves when we fall short of that goal.

🌿 What This Means for You

Maybe you’re dealing with something similar.
Chronic pain.
Joint issues.
A decision you’ve been wrestling with.
If that’s you, I want you to hear this:
You have not failed if natural approaches haven’t fully resolved everything.
Your worth is not measured by avoiding intervention.
And aging well is not about rigid rules.

It’s about:
  • Wisdom
  • Discernment
  • Adaptability
  • And courage

✨ Aging Vibrantly Means Living Honestly

This journey we’re on together isn’t about creating an image of perfect health.
It’s about building lives of:
  • Strength
  • Resilience
  • Faith
  • And integrity
Sometimes that includes green smoothies and strength training.
Sometimes it includes hard decisions and surgical intervention.
And often—it includes both.

💛 I’m Walking This With You

Right now, I’m in the early days of recovery.
Learning. Healing. Adjusting.
And I’ll be sharing more as I go:
  • What’s helping
  • What’s challenging
  • What I’m learning in real time
Because this isn’t just something I teach.
It’s something I live.
But right now, I am watching the Orioles and enjoying the ice machine while I rest and recuperate. PT tomorrow!

🌿 Final Thought

Aging well isn’t about avoiding every obstacle.
It’s about navigating them with wisdom, grace, and truth.
And sometimes…
It’s about knowing when to embrace a new tool—so you can keep moving forward.
